Help! No one looks like me! Inclusion Strategies

Help! No one looks like me! Inclusion Strategies

2016 Diversity Abroad Conference presentation

At first glance the field of education abroad is staffed by an overwhelmingly homogenous population. This can prevent students who don’t see themselves reflected in the staff they are working with from reaching out and exploring their options fully. How do we create inclusive spaces to enter conversations that help students from diverse populations consider their choices in order to make informed decisions about their experiences abroad? This session will help participants explore strategies for creating inclusive environments and developing programming that allows all students, regardless of identity, to feel welcomed and supported.

I too am study abroad

“I too am study abroad”

2016 Diversity Abroad Conference Presentation

SUNY Oswego dedicated itself to ensuring that education abroad was attainable by all students. Now, more than 25% of study abroad participants are from underrepresented groups on campus, mirroring campus demographic diversity.

One of the key programs responsible for this success was the “I, Too, Am Study Abroad” panel series. Inspired by a best practice learned at the 2014 Diversity Abroad conference, the goal of this panel series was to help past participants process their experiences overseas in relation to their identities, as well as encourage all students to realize the importance of an education abroad experience and help them understand that they, too, are study abroad.

2016 Annual Diversity Abroad Conference presentation

As a part of UCEAP’s initiative to reach out to underrepresented students to study abroad, we have made a commitment to Latino students to help them reach this goal. This session will show how powerful cross campus collaboration can help staff and faculty members to rise above expectations to engage Latino students with the support of family members. Join us as we cover common barriers to study abroad, cultural nuances, new marketing materials to Spanish speakers, and family ties.

Identifying Your Sphere of Influence

Identifying Your Sphere of Influence

New professionals in higher education abroad are most effective in their position once they understand their personal spheres of influence. This session will introduce entry-level professionals to basic concepts of personal leadership that will empower you to initiate conversations within your sphere of influence upon return to your home campus. Focus will be placed of identifying advocates of diversity within your university, building alliances with partner offices and creating pathways towards inclusion. Strategies include utilizing your individual leadership style to collaborate and build alliances that maximize opportunities for the delivery of rich study abroad experiences for a diverse student body.
