From Live Session on December 8, 2021

Session Description:

As travel mobility resumes against the backdrop of COVID-10, new challenges and barriers present themselves that impact historically underserved students’ abilities to participate in global learning opportunities. What are strategies and practices that we can implement before students participate in global education that can set them up for success?  Members of the Education Abroad – Student Support & Advising Taskforce will take a look at how professionals in the field are preparing students from underserved communities for global learning in a transformed world.

    Facilitators:

Mental Health: Navigating the Uncomfortable in the Workplace

Mental Health: Navigating the Uncomfortable in the Workplace

Wednesday, May 5 at 2:00 PM EST (Closed captioning available)

      Session Description:

Current effects of the pandemic have brought the importance of mental health in the workplace to the forefront. However, these conversations tend to focus on situational mental health or self care practices vs discussing some of the more chronic mental health challenges that many of our colleagues may face. How do we normalize these conversations? How do we as professionals advocate for accommodations in an international workplace? What role does leadership need to play in order to make sustainable change?

Queering Study Abroad: Diversifying Rainbow Community Support On-Site

Queering Study Abroad: Diversifying Rainbow Community Support On-Site

Wednesday, April 7 at 2:00 PM EST (Closed captioning available)

      Session Description:

On top of all of the preparation for a study abroad/away experience that all students need to navigate, those in the LGBTQIA+ (Queer or Rainbow) community are also expected to self-advocate in many additional ways: assessing their health and safety in the destination, outing themselves (often multiple times) to a new group of peers/mentors/local community members, finding inclusive housing, and identifying locations where they can find affinity spaces. We seek to “queer” study abroad programming on-site by embedding topics of gender and sexual orientation in the forefront, topics that can be richly explored in any culture, and relate to students from all identity backgrounds. This includes working with on-site instructors and coordinators on:

      • Navigating inclusive group dynamics, housing, and other logistical support
      • US and host country-specific LGBTQIA+ language and gender roles that may be pertinent
      • Queering the curriculum, what content are students studying and is it curated from an intersectional lens?
      • Queer history and culture in the location, its historical intersection with other identities in the culture, and how it connects with the main focus of study for all
      • Diversifying group activities about LGBTQIA+ culture
      • Representation in faculty, staff, tour guides and other individuals that students interact with while abroad
