The Future of DACA

The Future of DACA

From Live Session on September 13, 2017

Session Description:

On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, the Trump administration announced that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, established by the Obama administration in 2012, would be rescinded. This community discussion will serve as a platform for the Diversity Abroad community to address this evolving situation and its implications for the students and families we serve. What do we know about the current status and potential future of DACA? How might the administration’s announcement to rescind DACA impact students? What are the implications for the Global Education and Education Abroad community? What questions should institutions should be asking right now to prepare? What are opportunities for the Diversity Abroad community to advocate for students and families impacted by this announcement?

Can I Say That? Terminology in Diversity Conversations

Can I Say That? Terminology in Diversity Conversations

From Live Session on May 16, 2017

Session Description:

As advisors, it is our responsibility to address a number of concerns students have about study abroad—one of which is diversity and inclusion on an international scale. Sometimes, however we get caught up in the correct terms to use, and in our own discomfort in accidentally offending a student, we are unable to articulate diversity related concerns in a way that is meaningful to them. Here we will discuss ways to have diversity related conversations with students, terminology we should be abreast of, and ways to broach the conversation.

    Facilitators:

    • Tiphani Dixon – University of Missouri
    • Dr. Marlo Goldstein – University of Missouri
