In this community discussion, we seek to deconstruct and redefine these terms as they relate to study abroad. As professionals in the field, we must adopt tailored advising (taking into account the intersection of race/ethnicity/identity and study abroad) rather than a “one size fits all” approach when it comes to underrepresented and diverse students. We will also discuss different ways to be more open-minded while recruiting students to go abroad through the lens of intercultural competence. We seek to promote more inclusive and customized advising for students of color through intentional marketing and outreach, returned student feedback and the provision of resources (on-campus, provider-developed, and on-site). Ultimately, this discussion will begin preparing you with the tools to create more inclusive study abroad cohorts for racially and ethnically diverse students.
