Join us for a discussion on the importance of inclusive hiring, good practices tailored to international education, and practical steps you can take to attract and retain individuals committed to equity and diversity. This community discussion will provide inclusive hiring practices followed by a case study discussing the successes and challenges in implementation. We will also seek ideas and questions from participants to continue to build upon our collective efforts to diversify our community of international educators. “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” –Helen Keller

Better Together: Campus Collaboration to Support Students with Disabilities

From Live Session on January 18, 2018

      Session Description:

This community discussion — facilitated by the 2017-2018 Access for Disabilities Abroad Task Force — will focus on strategies for leveraging cross-campus collaborations to support students with disabilities throughout the education abroad process. As a way of framing the discussion, the session will provide a brief overview of the opportunities for collaboration that exist across campuses. Utilizing a case study approach, the session will then offer examples of collaborative efforts with offices including Disability Services and Counseling Services that aim to create effective access & support mechanisms for students with specific considerations such as ADHD, mental health, and limited mobility. Finally, facilitators will share additional resources available — such as the Diversity Abroad Advisor Manual: Access for Disabilities Abroad — for education abroad staff and faculty committed to equitable support in global programming for students with disabilities.

From Live Session on November 30, 2017

      Session Description:

Health and safety are critical components of education abroad (pre-departure planning and preparation, during the education abroad experience, and upon re-entry). Considerations for diverse students are essential when developing inclusive health and safety policies and procedures. Join this community discussion to explore integrative approaches to incorporating health and safety good practices to support students from diverse backgrounds throughout the education abroad process, with focus on discrimination, racism and mental health & security implications. Advising Students of Color: The Do’s and Dont’s

Advising Students of Color: The Do’s and Dont’s

From Live Session on September 28, 2017

      Session Description:

Diversity and Inclusivity are often (mis)characterized as synonymous concepts. In this community discussion, we seek to deconstruct and redefine these terms as they relate to study abroad. As professionals in the field, we must adopt tailored advising (taking into account the intersection of race/ethnicity/identity and study abroad) rather than a “one size fits all” approach when it comes to underrepresented and diverse students. We will also discuss different ways to be more open-minded while recruiting students to go abroad through the lens of intercultural competence. We seek to promote more inclusive and customized advising for students of color through intentional marketing and outreach, returned student feedback and the provision of resources (on-campus, provider-developed, and on-site). Ultimately, this discussion will begin preparing you with the tools to create more inclusive study abroad cohorts for racially and ethnically diverse students.

        Facilitators:

        • Brett Chin, Education Abroad Advisor, Babson College
        • Hernando Sevilla-Garcia, Diversity Relations Manager, IES Abroad
        • Candice Snowden, Education Abroad Advisor, University of Massachusetts Amherst

        The Future of DACA

        The Future of DACA

From Live Session on September 13, 2017

        Session Description:

On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, the Trump administration announced that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, established by the Obama administration in 2012, would be rescinded. This community discussion will serve as a platform for the Diversity Abroad community to address this evolving situation and its implications for the students and families we serve. What do we know about the current status and potential future of DACA? How might the administration’s announcement to rescind DACA impact students? What are the implications for the Global Education and Education Abroad community? What questions should institutions should be asking right now to prepare? What are opportunities for the Diversity Abroad community to advocate for students and families impacted by this announcement?
