Inclusion in the Digital Space

Inclusion in the Digital Space

From Live Session on February 14, 2020

Session Description:

As international educators look to moving more and more content online, what are best practices to ensure web-based and other digital content is accessible for all students (e.g. captions, alt text, images, font size, screenreaders, etc.) and is representative of the diversity of disabilities and persons engaged in these efforts. Participants and panel will begin by clarifying definitions in use for this discussion (access, digital information). We will then identify the types of digital information, access and technologies that might be encountered during the study abroad process. By the end of the discussion, participants will have a better understanding of challenges and resources to address those challenges.

Sexual Health Abroad through the LGBTQI+ Lens

Sexual Health Abroad through the LGBTQI+ Lens

From Live Session on November 1, 2019

    Session Description:

Empowering students with the necessary tools and resources regarding health, safety, and wellbeing abroad is an essential goal of many offices or institutions’ pre-departure programming. However, students’ sexual health — particularly the unique issues and concerns of LGBTQI+ identified students — is often overlooked or perhaps not sufficiently addressed in pre-departure orientations and materials. During this community discussion, participants will learn more about a few of the many sexual health considerations for LGBTQI+ identified student travelers, and discuss the ways in which important topics regarding sexual health can be better incorporated or emphasized in students’ comprehensive pre-departure preparations. Note: This session is designed for participants with an intermediate level of understanding of the LGBTQI+ community and issues.

Gulliver’s Travels When your Religious Community Shrinks or Grows

Gulliver’s (Religious) Travels: When your Religious Community Shrinks or Grows!

From Live Session on May 22, 2019

    Session Description:

There are many things students take with them when they go abroad, however their religious community and spiritual traditions are not always easy unpack in a new culture! What should a student consider when thinking about expressing their religious identity abroad? Beyond the religious community, there is also the religious status quo – what if while abroad, a student become a religious minority for the first time in their life? Or, is suddenly a member of a religious majority?
It’s important for students to anticipate these experiences, and for advisers to feel comfortable approaching this topic with them (regardless of whether they share the identity or feel comfortable discussing this). This community discussion will explore student experiences in religious contexts, and will provide education abroad professionals with resources, tools, and encouragement to discuss religious identity with students in pre-departure and during their time abroad.
