Study Abroad Advising for International Students

Study Abroad Advising for International Students

While there are plenty of resources available for international students studying in the United States or domestic students studying abroad, resources geared specifically towards international students pursuing study abroad are lacking. This document aims to fill this gap in advising resources. We cannot overlook the unique needs and considerations of this particular population, and they should be intentionally integrated into advisor-facing and student-facing digital and print materials. By the same token, the language we use in speaking about all facets of the study abroad experience should be more inclusive as the U.S. citizen lens tends to be the default.

Queering Study Abroad: Diversifying Rainbow Community Support On-Site

Queering Study Abroad: Diversifying Rainbow Community Support On-Site

Wednesday, April 7 at 2:00 PM EST (Closed captioning available)

    Session Description:

On top of all of the preparation for a study abroad/away experience that all students need to navigate, those in the LGBTQIA+ (Queer or Rainbow) community are also expected to self-advocate in many additional ways: assessing their health and safety in the destination, outing themselves (often multiple times) to a new group of peers/mentors/local community members, finding inclusive housing, and identifying locations where they can find affinity spaces. We seek to “queer” study abroad programming on-site by embedding topics of gender and sexual orientation in the forefront, topics that can be richly explored in any culture, and relate to students from all identity backgrounds. This includes working with on-site instructors and coordinators on:

    • Navigating inclusive group dynamics, housing, and other logistical support
    • US and host country-specific LGBTQIA+ language and gender roles that may be pertinent
    • Queering the curriculum, what content are students studying and is it curated from an intersectional lens?
    • Queer history and culture in the location, its historical intersection with other identities in the culture, and how it connects with the main focus of study for all
    • Diversifying group activities about LGBTQIA+ culture
    • Representation in faculty, staff, tour guides and other individuals that students interact with while abroad
