Host Family Guide: Students with Disabilities

Host Family Guide: Students with Disabilities

Developed by the 2019-2020 Access for Disabilities Task Force, this guide provides general tips, information, and resources to assist you in hosting a student with a Physical, Sensory, and/or Mental Health disability. Explore not only information on what a student’s potential disability requires, but how to begin a dialogue about how a student’s disability has the potential to impact the host family experience.

Diversity Abroad Advisor Manual: LGBTQI+ Students

Diversity Abroad Advisor Manual: LGBTQI+ Students

This guide is designed to provide concrete advice for study abroad professionals who are working with LGBTQI+ college and university students. The guide has been divided into sections in order to contextualize the topic and expose what is already known. We begin with a review of the research and a history of LGBTQI+ students in the study abroad context. The remaining sections provide detailed practical advice for supporting students during the research, application, preparation, time abroad, and re-entry phases of the study abroad process.

We use a stage-based approach in order to broaden the base of support for LGBTQI+ students beyond the recruitment phase, providing background information, advice, and resources in this guide. We hope this will help international educators and others to effectively support LGBTQI+ students from their initial interest in study abroad through their successful return.

To navigate through the manual, click on the hyperlinked Table of Contents (TOC) to go to a specific section. If you’d like to search for a specific term in the manual, hit the “CTRL” + “F” keys and enter your search term in the search field that appears and hit “Enter”. Links in the body of the document must be opened in a new tab.

Guide for Homestay Families Hosting LGBTQI+ Students Abroad

Guide for Homestay Families Hosting LGBTQI+ Students Abroad

This guide was produced by a subgroup of the 2019-2020 Diversity Abroad Task Force on LGBTQI+ Students. The Task Force is a collection of global education and diversity professionals who provide critical guidance and support to Diversity Abroad initiatives. The guide was developed from the collective advising and program management experience of the Task Force and was designed to provide a resource to homestay families who are hosting LGBTQI+ students on study abroad programs, and to international education professionals who work with these families.

Inclusion & Belonging in Times of Global Crisis: Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic

Inclusion & Belonging in Times of Global Crisis: Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic

From Live Session on March 26, 2020

Session Description:

As we grapple with the impact COVID-19 has on our institutions/organizations as well as on our colleagues and students, international educators remain committed to taking the lead in fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging in the wake of the concerning rise of xenophobia and racism as well as supporting students who may not have the support structures to navigate this crisis. While administrators are understandably swamped with ensuring their students are healthy, there are real challenges our international and domestic students may face within and beyond our campus communities. Join Diversity Abroad for a complimentary community discussion to support one another during these unprecedented times, share ideas and explore strategies for fostering inclusion & belonging in times of global crisis.

Facilitators:

  • Eduardo Contreras Jr., Ed.D., International Programs and Studies, Assistant Provost for International Education, Diversity and Inclusion – University of Portland
  • Andrew Gordon, CEO & Founder – Diversity Abroad
  • Asabe Poloma, Ph.D., Associate Dean for International Students & Director of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows Program – Brown University
